Type Expression created for Typography at Ivy Tech Community College
The objective of this assignment was to pick a word that described something about you and then using only black and white demonstrate that word on a page by use of font, placement, etc. I chose the word "Resolute" (meaning: purposeful, determined, and unwavering) and chose to place the word at the bottom of the page signifying how to is something sturdy that doesn't move, it is the bottom line if you will... when all else fails, it doesn't. I also created a shadow behind it to signify how it reflects on to everything, almost as the backdrop. Resolute is not an "in your face" adjective, but it is bold and very present.
The second part of this project was to then include your image interacting somehow with the text (still only in black and white). I chose to take a dramatic "straight forward" strong image that would add an extra layer to the message I was trying to convey. I worked with side-lighting to give the strong highlights and shadows, and kept a serious (by not harsh) expression to give the feeling of resolve. I switched the background and wording color to keep the word dominate, while making the shadow "fall behind" me in certain spaces give the image and word a stronger interaction and link.
